Methuselah
In the game now · Counselor of the house
Methuselah was Enoch's son and Noah's grandfather. He lived 969 years, the longest life in the Bible. That is all the text tells about him.
The story
Genesis gives Methuselah only a few lines: his father, Enoch; his son, Lamech; his other sons and daughters; and his age, 969 years. Lamech was the father of Noah.
The Bible tells no deed of Methuselah and no word he said. He is not in the list of the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11. What he has is time: no other person in the text lived so long.
“When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived in close fellowship with God for another 300 years, and he had other sons and daughters. Enoch lived 365 years, walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him. When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech. After the birth of Lamech, Methuselah lived another 782 years, and he had other sons and daughters. Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.”Genesis 5:21-27 NLT
“Lamech named his son Noah, for he said, “May he bring us relief from our work and the painful labor of farming this ground that the Lord has cursed.””Genesis 5:29 NLT
In the game
In the game, Methuselah is the counselor of every house from the start: the old man who remembers the ages and gives short advice, with good humour and the right verse. He never makes up a deed, never speaks for God and gives no power at all. After the flood, his words come as a memory: "Methuselah used to say...".
