Bread for every house

Wheat

What it is

Wheat is a grass whose seeds, the grains, are ground into flour. It was the best bread grain of the land, sown in autumn and harvested in early summer.

Where it is in the Bible

Moses lists wheat first among the good things of the land that God was giving (Deuteronomy 8:8). In the book of Ruth, the wheat harvest ends the summer in Boaz’s fields. Jesus speaks of a single grain of wheat that dies in the soil and brings a rich harvest.

“It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey.”Deuteronomy 8:8 NLT
“So Ruth worked alongside the women in Boaz’s fields and gathered grain with them until the end of the barley harvest. Then she continued working with them through the wheat harvest in early summer. And all the while she lived with her mother-in-law.”Ruth 2:23 NLT
“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.”John 12:24 NLT

How people used it

Women ground the grain between stones and baked flat loaves every day. Families threshed it on hard, flat ground, then tossed it in the wind so the light chaff blew away. The best flour was kept for guests and for offerings.

What it meant in the story

Wheat shows that daily bread is a gift: people sow and work, but God gives the rain and the harvest. The grain that is buried and rises again became a picture of new life.

In the game

Grain is the first resource of the village. Build a grain field and you will have bread for your people.
