The snake in the garden

Serpent

What it is

A serpent is a snake. Many kinds lived in the land, in the grass, among rocks and in the desert.

Where it is in the Bible

In the garden, the serpent was the shrewdest of the wild animals and asked the woman a question (Genesis 3:1). God promised that the woman’s offspring would strike the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15). In the desert, Moses made a snake of bronze on a pole, and anyone who was bitten and looked at it was healed (Numbers 21:9).

“The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?””Genesis 3:1 NLT
“And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.””Genesis 3:15 NLT
“So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed!”Numbers 21:9 NLT

How people used it

People in the land knew snakes well and kept out of their way, and they feared a bite in the field. Shepherds used the staff to keep them away. The bronze snake of Moses was kept for many years.

What it meant in the story

The serpent is how the Bible tells of a trick that led people away from trusting God. God’s answer came with a promise, and later with the bronze snake, where looking up in trust brought healing.
