The lion of Judah

Lion

What it is

The lion is a big wild cat with a golden coat. Lions lived in the land in Bible times, in thickets by the Jordan and in the hills.

Where it is in the Bible

Jacob blessed his son Judah, “a young lion” (Genesis 49:9). David told Saul that he had protected his father’s flock from a lion and a bear (1 Samuel 17:34). Daniel said that God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths (Daniel 6:22).

“Judah, my son, is a young lion that has finished eating its prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?”Genesis 49:9 NLT
“But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock,”1 Samuel 17:34 NLT
“My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in his sight. And I have not wronged you, Your Majesty.””Daniel 6:22 NLT

How people used it

Shepherds had to guard their flocks from lions. Kings and nations used the lion as a sign of strength on thrones and banners. People hunted lions to keep the flock safe.

What it meant in the story

The lion stands for strength, and in the Bible it is both a danger and a picture. David trusted God against it, and Daniel was kept safe in a den of lions. Judah, the tribe of kings, is compared to a lion.

In the game

Not in the game yet. It is the sign of Judah, in a later age.
