The Amalekites were a desert people who attacked Israel on the way out of Egypt.
The story
At Rephidim the warriors of Amalek attacked Israel. As long as Moses held up the staff, Israel had the advantage.
After the battle Moses built an altar and called it “the Lord is my banner”.
