Grapevine
What it is
The grapevine is a climbing plant that grows clusters of grapes. It likes the stony, sunny hills of the land and can live for many years.
Where it is in the Bible
The first vineyard in the Bible is Noah’s, planted after the flood (Genesis 9:20). The spies brought back a cluster of grapes so big that two men carried it on a pole (Numbers 13:23). The prophet Micah pictures peace as every family sitting under its own vine and fig tree (Micah 4:4). Jesus says, “I am the vine” (John 15:5).
“After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard.”Genesis 9:20 NLT
“Everyone will live in peace and prosperity, enjoying their own grapevines and fig trees, for there will be nothing to fear. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has made this promise!”Micah 4:4 NLT
““Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”John 15:5 NLT
How people used it
People ate grapes fresh, dried them as raisins and boiled the juice into a sweet syrup. They pressed the rest in a stone winepress to make wine. Vineyards had a wall and a watchtower to keep out thieves and animals.
What it meant in the story
A vineyard needs patient care for years before it gives fruit, so it became a picture of peace and of a home at rest. Jesus uses the vine to show that we bear fruit when we stay close to him.
In the game
The vineyard is a building of your village, and it takes room for three by three plots.
