Fig tree
What it is
The fig tree is a spreading tree with big, rough leaves and soft, sweet fruit. It grows easily in the dry hills of the land.
Where it is in the Bible
The first leaves in the Bible are fig leaves, which Adam and Eve sewed together (Genesis 3:7). The spies brought figs back from the valley of Eshcol (Numbers 13:23). Micah’s picture of peace is every family enjoying its own grapevines and fig trees (Micah 4:4).
“At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.”Genesis 3:7 NLT
“When they came to the valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them! They also brought back samples of the pomegranates and figs.”Numbers 13:23 NLT
“Everyone will live in peace and prosperity, enjoying their own grapevines and fig trees, for there will be nothing to fear. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has made this promise!”Micah 4:4 NLT
How people used it
Figs were eaten fresh in summer and pressed into dried cakes that lasted all year. The wide leaves gave cool shade, and families sat under the tree to rest and talk. A tree stood in many yards.
What it meant in the story
To sit under your own fig tree meant to live in peace, without fear. The fig tree is one of the quiet signs of a land that is safe and well fed.
In the game
Not a building, but a tree of the land. The artists have painted a young fig and a grown one, and they will grow in your village.
