Pomegranate
What it is
The pomegranate is a small tree with red fruit as big as an apple. Inside, it is full of juicy seeds in a sweet red pulp.
Where it is in the Bible
Pomegranates were among the fruits the spies brought from Eshcol (Numbers 13:23). God told Moses to sew pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn on the hem of the priest’s robe (Exodus 28:33). Solomon had rows of carved pomegranates on the pillars of the temple (1 Kings 7:18).
“Make pomegranates out of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and attach them to the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them.”Exodus 28:33 NLT
“When they came to the valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them! They also brought back samples of the pomegranates and figs.”Numbers 13:23 NLT
“He also encircled the latticework with two rows of pomegranates to decorate the capitals over the pillars.”1 Kings 7:18 NLT
How people used it
People ate the fruit fresh and drank its tart juice. The tough rind was dried and used to dye cloth and tan leather. The pomegranate was also a favorite shape for carvers and weavers.
What it meant in the story
The pomegranate is a mark of a good land, and its many seeds are a picture of plenty. Because it was sewn on the priest’s robe and carved in the temple, it was a sign of beauty in the worship of God.
In the game
