Olive tree

What it is

The olive is a slow-growing tree with silvery leaves and a twisted trunk. It can live for hundreds of years, and its small fruit gives oil.

Where it is in the Bible

A dove brought Noah a fresh olive leaf, and he knew the water was going down (Genesis 8:11). God told Moses to bring pure oil of pressed olives to keep the lamps burning (Exodus 27:20). The psalmist says, “I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God” (Psalm 52:8).

“This time the dove returned to him in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. Then Noah knew that the floodwaters were almost gone.”Genesis 8:11 NLT
““Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.”Exodus 27:20 NLT
“But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love.”Psalm 52:8 NLT

How people used it

Olives were pressed in a stone mill to make oil. Families cooked with it, used it as lamp oil, rubbed it on skin and mixed it into bread. Olives were also cured in salt and eaten. The wood is hard and good for carving.

What it meant in the story

The olive leaf became a sign that the storm was over. Oil was also poured on kings and priests to set them apart for God. A tree that lives long and gives year after year is a picture of trust in God’s love.

In the game

Olive oil is a resource of the village, and olive trees, young and grown, are painted for your land.
