The dove with an olive leaf

Dove

What it is

The dove is a small, gentle bird with soft gray feathers and a cooing voice. It nests in cliffs and in the roofs of houses.

Where it is in the Bible

Noah released a dove to see if the water had receded (Genesis 8:8). The second time, the dove came back in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak (Genesis 8:11). When Jesus came up out of the water after his baptism, the Spirit of God came down like a dove (Matthew 3:16).

“He also released a dove to see if the water had receded and it could find dry ground.”Genesis 8:8 NLT
“This time the dove returned to him in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. Then Noah knew that the floodwaters were almost gone.”Genesis 8:11 NLT
“After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.”Matthew 3:16 NLT

How people used it

The dove was a bird that poor families could bring as an offering. People kept doves in dovecotes for eggs and meat. Messengers in some lands also used them to carry news, because they know the way home.

What it meant in the story

In the flood story the dove is the first sign that the earth is starting to heal. It is a sign of peace and of a new beginning, and later of the Spirit of God resting on Jesus.

In the game

Not in the game yet. We keep a place for it in the sky of the village.
