Horse
What it is
The horse is a fast, strong animal. In the Bible lands it belonged to kings and armies, not to common farms.
Where it is in the Bible
In the famine, the people of Egypt brought their horses, flocks and donkeys to Joseph for food (Genesis 47:17). After the sea was crossed, Moses and Israel sang, “he has hurled both horse and rider into the sea” (Exodus 15:1). A psalm says, “Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7).
“So they brought their livestock to Joseph in exchange for food. In exchange for their horses, flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, and donkeys, Joseph provided them with food for another year.”Genesis 47:17 NLT
“Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord: “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; he has hurled both horse and rider into the sea.”Exodus 15:1 NLT
“Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God.”Psalm 20:7 NLT
How people used it
Horses pulled the chariots of Egypt and of the kings of Canaan. A rider on a horse was a sign of power. Farmers and shepherds in Israel mostly used donkeys and oxen, since horses were costly.
What it meant in the story
The horse stood for the strength of nations. The Bible keeps saying that the people of God should not put their trust in horses and chariots, but in the Lord, who saved them at the sea.
In the game
Not in the game yet. It is part of the story of the enemies’ armies in later ages.
