Camel
What it is
The camel is a tall animal with a hump, made for the desert. It can walk for days with little water and carry heavy loads.
Where it is in the Bible
Abraham’s servant loaded ten camels with gifts and traveled to find a wife for Isaac (Genesis 24:10). When Rebekah saw Isaac, she quickly dismounted from her camel (Genesis 24:64). A caravan of camels carrying spices, balm and myrrh took Joseph to Egypt (Genesis 37:25).
“Then he loaded ten of Abraham’s camels with all kinds of expensive gifts from his master, and he traveled to distant Aram-naharaim. There he went to the town where Abraham’s brother Nahor had settled.”Genesis 24:10 NLT
“When Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac, she quickly dismounted from her camel.”Genesis 24:64 NLT
“Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt.”Genesis 37:25 NLT
How people used it
Camels carried goods along the trade roads, such as spices, balm and myrrh. A caravan could cross dry land that no other animal could. Camel hair was woven into cloth, and the milk was drunk. A man who owned many camels was a rich man.
What it meant in the story
Camels made the long trips of Genesis possible: the bride-search for Isaac, and the trip that took Joseph from his home. God used a caravan on the road to move a family’s story forward.
