Donkey

What it is

The donkey is a small, sturdy animal with long ears. It carries heavy loads on rough paths and needs little food and water.

Where it is in the Bible

Abraham saddled his donkey early in the morning and set out with his son Isaac (Genesis 22:3). When Balaam beat his donkey, the Lord gave it the ability to speak (Numbers 22:28). Zechariah said that the king of Zion would come humble, riding on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9).

“The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about.”Genesis 22:3 NLT
“Then the Lord gave the donkey the ability to speak. “What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?” it asked Balaam.”Numbers 22:28 NLT
“Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.”Zechariah 9:9 NLT

How people used it

Donkeys carried packs and people across the land and turned the mill. A family’s donkey was its most valuable helper, and it was the usual animal for a journey in peace. Kings and judges rode them as well.

What it meant in the story

The donkey is the animal of a humble journey. It carried Abraham toward a hard test, it surprised Balaam, and the prophet saw a coming king on a donkey. The Bible honors the quiet servant.
