The strength of the farm

Ox

What it is

The ox is a big, strong farm animal with horns. It pulls the plow and the cart and treads out the grain.

Where it is in the Bible

Pharaoh gave Abram gifts that included cattle (Genesis 12:16). The law said, “You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain” (Deuteronomy 25:4). Proverbs says that for a large harvest you need a strong ox (Proverbs 14:4).

“Then Pharaoh gave Abram many gifts because of her—sheep, goats, cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.”Genesis 12:16 NLT
““You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.”Deuteronomy 25:4 NLT
“Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest.”Proverbs 14:4 NLT

How people used it

Oxen pulled the wooden plow in spring and walked over the cut grain on the threshing floor in summer. They also pulled carts. A farmer with a pair of oxen was a well-off farmer, and the animals rested on the Sabbath too.

What it meant in the story

The ox teaches fairness: the one who works should eat. Good work and a good harvest come together, and God cares even for the animals that serve the farm.
