Date palm
What it is
The date palm is a tall tree with a straight trunk and a crown of long feathery leaves. In hot places it gives sweet fruit, the date, and tall shade.
Where it is in the Bible
At the oasis of Elim, the Israelites found twelve springs and seventy palm trees (Exodus 15:27). The judge Deborah sat under the Palm of Deborah, and the people came to her for judgment (Judges 4:5). The psalmist says the godly will flourish like palm trees (Psalm 92:12).
“After leaving Marah, the Israelites traveled on to the oasis of Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees. They camped there beside the water.”Exodus 15:27 NLT
“She would sit under the Palm of Deborah, between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites would go to her for judgment.”Judges 4:5 NLT
“But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.”Psalm 92:12 NLT
How people used it
Dates were eaten fresh or dried, and they were a sweet food that lasted on a long trip. The leaves made roofs, mats and baskets, and the trunk made beams. A palm tree was a sign of water nearby.
What it meant in the story
A palm tree standing in the desert told tired travelers that there was water. It also became a picture of someone who is upright and who keeps growing, even in a dry place.
In the game
Not a building, but a tree of the land. A date palm is painted for your village.
