The great tree of Lebanon

Cedar

What it is

The cedar is a huge evergreen tree with wide, flat branches. It grew on the mountains of Lebanon, north of Israel, and its wood is sweet-smelling and strong.

Where it is in the Bible

King Solomon asked the king of Tyre to send cedars from Lebanon to build the temple (1 Kings 5:6). David lived in a beautiful palace of cedar while the Ark of God was still in a tent (2 Samuel 7:2). The psalmist says the godly will grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon (Psalm 92:12).

““Therefore, please command that cedars from Lebanon be cut for me. Let my men work alongside yours, and I will pay your men whatever wages you ask. As you know, there is no one among us who can cut timber like you Sidonians!””1 Kings 5:6 NLT
“the king summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of God is out there in a tent!””2 Samuel 7:2 NLT
“But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.”Psalm 92:12 NLT

How people used it

Cedar was the wood of kings. It was cut in the mountains, floated down the coast and hauled to Jerusalem. It was used for the beams and walls of the temple and for palaces. Because the wood resists rot and bugs, it was also used for fine chests.

What it meant in the story

The cedar stands for strength and for what is lasting. David’s wish to build a house for the Ark was born when he looked at his cedar palace.

In the game

Cedar is a rare resource of the village, and it comes in later ages. Its first use in the story is in the temple.
