Cypress
What it is
The cypress is a tall, narrow evergreen tree that points to the sky like a flame. Its wood is hard, pale and sweet-smelling.
Where it is in the Bible
God told Noah, “Build a large boat from cypress wood” (Genesis 6:14). In the temple, the floors were planks of cypress, and the walls were cedar (1 Kings 6:15). The prophet Isaiah says God will plant cypress in the barren desert (Isaiah 41:19).
““Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.”Genesis 6:14 NLT
“The entire inside, from floor to ceiling, was paneled with wood. He paneled the walls and ceilings with cedar, and he used planks of cypress for the floors.”1 Kings 6:15 NLT
“I will plant trees in the barren desert— cedar, acacia, myrtle, olive, cypress, fir, and pine.”Isaiah 41:19 NLT
How people used it
Cypress wood was good for ships, doors, floors and beams, because it is strong and lasts a long time. Many ships of the old world were built from it. The evergreen tree also gave a windbreak and shade.
What it meant in the story
Noah’s cypress boat is the picture of a home that keeps a family safe through the storm. Cypress in the desert is a sign that God can make a dry land grow.
In the game
Cypress wood is the craft of Noah’s ark (Genesis 6:14), and a cypress is painted for your village.
