The field of Machpelah
The Hittites
In the story of the land
The Hittites of Genesis lived at Hebron. Abraham bought from them the field and the cave where he buried Sarah.
The story
Abraham called himself a stranger and a foreigner among the Hittites, and asked to buy a place to bury his wife.
The field and the cave passed from the Hittites to Abraham as a burial place.
““Here I am, a stranger and a foreigner among you. Please sell me a piece of land so I can give my wife a proper burial.””Genesis 23:4 NLT
“So the field and the cave were transferred from the Hittites to Abraham for use as a permanent burial place.”Genesis 23:20 NLT
““When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These seven nations are greater and more numerous than you.”Deuteronomy 7:1 NLT
In the game
The Hittites are not an enemy village in the game. Not every meeting in Genesis was a battle: Abraham paid for the field.
