Goat
What it is
The goat is a sure-footed animal with horns and a beard. It climbs rocky hills and eats nearly anything, so it does well where sheep cannot.
Where it is in the Bible
Rebekah told Jacob to bring two fine young goats for his father’s favorite dish (Genesis 27:9). Jacob asked for the speckled and spotted sheep and goats as his wages (Genesis 30:32). The book of Proverbs says there will be enough goats’ milk for the family (Proverbs 27:27).
“Go out to the flocks, and bring me two fine young goats. I’ll use them to prepare your father’s favorite dish.”Genesis 27:9 NLT
“Let me inspect your flocks today and remove all the sheep and goats that are speckled or spotted, along with all the black sheep. Give these to me as my wages.”Genesis 30:32 NLT
“And you will have enough goats’ milk for yourself, your family, and your servant girls.”Proverbs 27:27 NLT
How people used it
Goats gave milk, cheese and meat. Their hair was woven into dark tents, and their skins were sewn into bags for water and wine. They often grazed with the sheep, and a shepherd looked after both.
What it meant in the story
Goats show that a household could live on little. They were the daily food and tent cloth of families who moved across the land, and they were part of the flocks the patriarchs passed to their children.
In the game
Goats are part of your flock in the sheepfold.
