Sheep

What it is

Sheep are woolly animals that eat grass and live in flocks. They follow their shepherd and are easily lost without one.

Where it is in the Bible

The first shepherd in the Bible is Abel (Genesis 4:2). Abram, Isaac and Jacob all lived by their flocks. David wrote, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need” (Psalm 23:1). Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11).

“Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground.”Genesis 4:2 NLT
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.”Psalm 23:1 NLT
““I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.”John 10:11 NLT

How people used it

Sheep gave wool for clothes and tents, milk and cheese, and meat. Their skins became leather. A family’s wealth was counted in its flock, and shepherds led the sheep to water and grass and slept near them at night.

What it meant in the story

Because sheep need a shepherd, the Bible uses them to show how God cares for his people. A good shepherd knows each sheep, leads it to water and stays with it in the dark.

In the game

The sheepfold is a building of your village, and the flock gives wool, milk and meat.
